Earn Your GED

The GED is a diploma that you can earn by passing the GED test. (GED stands for General Educational Development).  To pass the test you need to perform at the same level as a high school graduate in: reading, writing, math, science and social studies.  The GED is a high school equivalency diploma.

How to prepare for the GED and length of time it will take
For most people, a structured program of study and preparation is necessary.  The Jay School Corporation offers a GED preparation program or Adult Basic Education classes through the John Jay Center. You might need one semester to prepare, or years, depending on your existing skills and knowledge. Don't despair if you need to dedicate months or years to preparing for the test. After all, high school itself takes 4 years. The time spent in the GED classroom will be well spent for the job opportunities it will open to you.

Cost of attending a GED program
There is no cost to enroll in a Jay County GED program.  The only cost to obtain a GED diploma is the cost of taking the GED test.  This cost is currently $70 and some students may be eligible for financial aid to pay this fee.

Student Eligibility/Enrollment
Students must be 16 years of age or older and have withdrawn from high school.  There is no upper age limit.  It is not uncommon for students in their fifties and sixties to enroll in our class.  If you have any question about whether you may be eligible to attend classes, call the John Jay Center or stop by for additional information.

Enrollment begins by stopping by or calling the John Jay Center during regular business hours, and you will receive an appointment to take a test which evaluates your current skill level.  Once you have completed this initial orientation test, you will be assigned to one of the John Jay GED classes.

When and where are GED classes offered
GED classes are offered from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday, at the John Jay Center in room 206 (upstairs) at 101 S. Meridian St., Portland.  Students may attend as many of these classes as they wish.  Most classes are two hours in length.

GED Graduation
GED graduation for those graduates who wish to attend is held each May for those who have passed the GED test in the past year.  You are awarded your GED diploma as soon as you have passed the GED test.  Although we encourage students to attend the GED graduation each May to celebrate their accomplishment of passing the test, it is not necessary to attend the actual GED graduation ceremony to receive your diploma.
